HELP ME CHOOSE THE ‘DISGRACED CELEBRITY OF THE SUMMER– Is it Michael Jackson (RIP)? Sarah Palin? Governor Mark– Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina– Sanford? Jon & Kate (but someone explain who they are)? Or nominee(s) of your own? Let me know your burning August thoughts on this…thanxx! Elizabeth

PS Update on Aug. 13: the race is heating up and there is still time to vote; for those having trouble making up their minds, check out this YouTube Instant-classic inspired by the Mark Sanford saga, with thanks to creator, Wickham.
PPS: also see Greg Kesich on Sarah Palin & more in the Portland Press Herald.
I LOVE this photo of you, Elizabeth!
Thanxx Linda– my son took it and I gave him a dollar so it could be his first professional photo– xx– Elizabeth
My vote is for Sarah Palin. She should be ashamed of herself. I try to teach my kids that it’s okay to stop doing something they’ve signed up for–after the commitment is over! It is not okay to quit something in the middle.
I second that emotion, as a fellow Mom! Thanks for the vote & note–
Elizabeth
I nominate Ryan O’Neal…the only guy on earth I could fault for hitting on Tatum O’Neal (I met her on the set of “Rescue Me”…it was the only thing that made that 14hr blistering hot summer shoot worth it).
Yes, an excellent choice– I believe Ryan O. is currently running #2 in an online poll for Worst Celebrity Parent; he is ranked behind only the hard-to-beat Mr. Jackson, father of Michael (see comment on this blog by ‘Litotes’ offering the theory that MJ’s dad may have castrated him as a child; if that proved true, would it change your vote?) Thanks for putting Ryan in the running here– Elizabeth
I vote Marc Sanford. What an extraordinary public meltdown.
Best line about Marc Sanford comes from Maureen Dowd, completing the loop from Sanford to Sotomayor:
“Mr. Graham said Judge Sotomayor would be confirmed unless she had ‘a meltdown’– a word applied mostly to women and toddlers until Mark Sanford proudly took ownership of it when he was judged about the wisdom of his Latina woman.”
So true; a much-deserved nominee and a well-chosen Mo-Do quote. Sanford is at the top (or maybe it’s the bottom) of my list too–Elizabeth

Actually David Carradine gets three votes: dumb, dead, disgraced.
Don’t get me wrong, I was one of the 5 Americans who were actually pissed off when Nixon’s resignation speech pre-empted Kung Fu.
Master Litotes– You rule. Three great reasons to vote David. I hear you about Kung Fu too, & Nixon– Sexy David should’ve trumped Tricky Dick.
David C. died w/ his boots on, so to speak, but yes, I agree: in a fine triple-d state of divine disgrace…
As a friend of Carradine noted online, w/ affection&admiration, “You wouldn’t expect David to die in his sleep.”
RIP, Grasshopper!

Funny how Sarah has become more famous for being a “celebrity” than a politician.
She’s still hot, though…
Yes, I agree; Sarah has ‘crossed over’ and is now totally a Celeb– maybe ‘because’
she’s still hot–? Are you ‘voting’ for her for Disgraced Celeb? If so, you will rocket her into first place, with Ryan O’Neal, Mark Sanford & David Carradine (RIP) in hot pursuit…
“I think on a national level your Department of Law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we’ve been charged with and automatically throw them out.” –Sarah Palin, referring to a department that does not exist while attempting to explain why as president she wouldn’t be subjected to the same ethics investigations that compelled her to resign as governor of Alaska, ABC News interview, July 7, 2009
Whether today or next year, she’d still get my vote.
Wow– let’s hope she never has a chance to set up that
DEPARTMENT OF LAW at the White House– thanks for putting
Sarah P. in the lead as we come down the summer’s homestretch–
cheers to all at UMB and keep the comments coming–
Elizabeth
A NOMINATION FROM WILL H>:
I nominate Dick Cheney for Disgraced Celebrity of the Summer. For creating his ‘personal Assassination Squad’ without informing Congress.
REPLY TO WILL H:
I have to agree– this is surely the Most Disgraceful behavior of the summer or century (so far–) Thanks for bringing Dick the National Disgrace into the mix– ELizabeth
UPDATE/AUGUST 12:
Sarah Palin is leaping into the lead in the race for Disgrace;
For more reasons to vote Sarah, see Greg Kesich on Sarah Palin & more in the Portland Press Herald:

May I propose who should NOT be nominated? As a sports enthusiast, I’d say Michael Vick. The guy seems repentant enough, and now I hear that there’s an uproar over his having had one drink at an airport bar. Have we all lost our minds? Aren’t there more disgraceful celebs to rage over?
Hi Weekend Warrior– well-put! I agree– Vick is sorry and has done his time– and what’s wrong with a drink at an airport bar? No animals were injured during that little ‘scandal’– yes, let’s chill out over Vick and thanks for weighing in–
We need more sports figures on the site, including you, Weekend Warrior–
Elizabeth
A new vote just in from ‘Mark’:
Mark
Is this where I vote? Ok, my number 1 disgraced celeb is (and I guess politicians count) Mark Sanford.
edit this on August 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm | Replyeasearle
Thanks Mark– but you aren’t Mark Sanford yourself, are you? (He does seem on the thin edge; maybe he’s voting for himself…) and yes, cast those votes anywhere on the blog–
cheers– Elizabeth
