With the fun and junk-foody People’s Choice awards kicking off the buffet of Award Shows, Oscar Predictions are rising. For scandal-handicappers, guessing who will not be picked is also fair game. Morgan Freeman has Oscar buzz– but a possible scandal brewing about Freeman and his step-grandaughter may nix a win.
Maybe only Jen-Lo. herself believes Jen-Lo. has been robbed of an Oscar nod. (For El Cantante, no less). Who will be claiming foul play this year?
Sandra Bullock (below) won People’s Choices and appears to be swimming toward an Oscar nod too, unhindered by her reality TV star husband’s custody-battle scandal.
But can anyone beat scandal-free Meryl Streep for Best Actress?
And what about Brad Pitt’s drinking buddy, the shoo-in Best Actor nominee George Clooney? Clooney and Streep both radiate old-style movie-star charisma. Will that carry these two old pro.s over the top?
For the inevitable Young Upstart nominee: blog fave. Zooey Deschanel gave a star-making performance in (500) Days of Summer– as did Carrey Mulligan in the slightly weightier AN EDUCATION and Mo’Nique in the high-intensity PRECIOUS. Who will/should grab the gold this year? And those less-weighty but maybe ‘cooler’ Golden Globes, rolling toward us this weekend? WDYT?
(photos- SandraB: softpicks; Meryl: blog.jaman.com; Zooey D: Googleimages) Thanks to Mark for Balloon Boy’s Dad…And thanks to Litotes for our Word of the Day, in nominating femme fatale Zoe Saldana of AVATAR: ‘Ava-tart.’

my votes are for carrey mulligan and george clooney
I saw Carrey M. in an education and yep, she’s terrific; Clooney too and the time is right for him; probably too early for CM, at least to win…Thanks for jumping in with Win Predictions!
May the best humanoid win … but/and … gotta put in a word for the “Ava-tart” Zoe Saldana, quite the out-of-this-world extra-terriestrial.
Also Geoge “yer fired but in a humanistic way” Clooney.
My daughter – my ducats – how can I decide ?!
Litotes–
OK, one vote for the Ava-tart–
plus a vote to quickly coin that word–
And I’m with you on Clooney too…
INGLORIOUS BASTARDS
IS NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES
NOT AN AWARD TYPE MOVIE BUT SHOULD BE
hi Anti-Star:
I hear you–
As you may have noticed, our Blog keeps advising the Inglorious Brad Pitt to lose the grey goatee.
Things might look up then… Plus, do you think the Bastards’ film title may be working against it, award-wise?
Anyway, just based on admiring your screen name, I will believe you that Inglorious Bastards deserves a place in the race…
don’t forget ‘young victoria’ also, and i agree that mo’nique deserves a nomination, that whole film
Hi Livvy–
Yes I just looked that up: EMILY BLUNT would be the nominated actress and the film site is:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0962736/
We have a link on the Post on Mo’nique too–
good thoughts with young actresses, and neither of them fitting the standard cookie-cutter starlet pattern…
I’m getting screeners for the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Can’t wait to help select the winners! As such, I can’t post my feelings about who is going to win what award for any show, other than my one thought re: who will win the Oscar for Best Director — Kathryn Bigelow. That’s my prediction!
Exciting, Caitlin, to hear from one of the Powers that Be in filmaking. Congrats on your screening status.
Meanwhile I hope you are right in your Kathryn Bigelow prediction. I saw her speak at the Nantucket Film Festival and I was impressed; she’s super-committed to her work, intense and intelligent, and she’s really paid her dues… Plus it’s ‘over-due’ for Oscar to bestow a Best Director on someone w/o a beard.
(Do you notice the bearded guys always win? Even Ron Howard who looks bad in a beard grew one once he became a big-time director; maybe that is Brad Pitt’s secret agenda…)
I don’t think scandals preclude winning Oscars (Freeman).
Loved Clooney in Up in the Air but have an open mind.
Hi Penny2:
You may be right about Freeman; he could still nab it–
But I feel it’s Clooney’s time, his turn; he has a Best Supporting but really he is a Leading Man and one of the few male boxoffice stars with some class and gravitas…
Let’s see who sweeps the Globes this weekend–
cheers!
Elizabeth
Meryl Streep was not that great in Julia–her performance was forced, and she tried too hard…she can not be all things to all people. George has my vote for Up in the Air–superb acting. The movie should get the nod for best picture. It couldn’t have been better!
Hi Barb:
I agree with you totally about Clooney; he is a true Movie Star and this was a great role for him. No other big male star can do humor like him, and humanity too.
About Streep: respectfully, I disagree. This was my favorite Streep performance and seemed to me one of her more natural. I agree she can be very mannered in other roles, but this one, I was ‘with her.’
It will be interesting to see if Streep and Clooney clean up at the Golden Globes–
Good to have your thoughts!
Elizabeth
