Thanks Caitlin for this upbeat Post; For the ‘low-down’ on JOHN MAYER & more, scroll down…And THANKS WILLIAM ZABKA for being the first FILM STAR to let us quote him (see COMMENTS)!
An award-winning screenwriter at international film festivals and labs, Caitlin McCarthy has two projects in development: “Wonder Drug” with director Tom Gilroy (“Spring Forward”); and “Resistance” with director Si Wall (“Marbella Nights”).

** Emilio Estevez: Moved away from directing flops like MEN AT WORK and showed serious promise with BOBBY. Deserves to helm a big-budget flick that will garner awards.
** Rutger Hauer: Total hottie in BLADE RUNNER. Could be a silver fox on a TV drama like “24.”

** Aidan Quinn: Should be a MUCH bigger star than he is. I first fell in “movie love” with him as a pre-teen when I saw the movie “Reckless.” Why has Hollywood missed the boat with him? Make him the romantic lead, not the lovelorn brother a la LEGENDS OF THE FALL.
** Ione Skye: Showed so much promise in SAY ANYTHING. She’s still a knockout and a talent. Bring her back!
** Hart Bochner: Great as a baddie in BREAKING AWAY and DIE HARD (“Hans, bubby, I’m your white knight!”). He also showed his acting chops in the indie hit APARTMENT ZERO. He is mega-watt handsome and deserves to be in major films.
** Kate Jackson: Poor Sabrina. Always overshadowed by Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, etc. This sassy brunette needs a spotlight of her own. Put her on “Damages” next season.
** William Zabka: He’s the blond “mean teen” from KARATE KID. Has moved behind the scenes as an Oscar-nominated filmmaker (check out his short film MOST), but I miss him in front of the camera. He showed his serious side on “The Equalizer.” Can’t he be a lawyer on “The Good Wife”?
** Phoebe Cates: Guys remember her as the gal who shed her red bikini top in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. But I remember her in GREMLINS: Sweet-faced and likable. I heard she retired from acting to raise her kids with Kevin Kline. But Phebes, please reconsider that decision. You are FAR from being 65!

PS: Thanks Caitlin for ‘the career of William Zabka in five minutes or less’… And THANKS to WILLIAM ZABKA himself for becoming our first celebrity ‘commenter,’ graciously giving Caitlin permission to quote his words. Watch for William Z. in an upcoming John Cusack comedy– see link below– Congrats and best wishes to William Zabka!

A BIG THUMZ UP TO KATE JACKSON AND PHOEBE CATES
Good morning AntiStar and good to hear from you–
A big thumz-up YES from me to KATE JACKSON, my favorite angel and she still looks super.
I don’t recall Phoebe Cates except I remember one year she was a charming presenter at the Oscars when she was, like, 16…
My biggest Thumz Up is to CAITLIN for coming up with this compassionate concept– there’s lots of talent out there that deserves another look…
I totally agree with Ione Skye. I was just thinking about her this past weekend when I caught SAY ANYTHING on cable. Plus she was excellent in GAS, FOOD, LODGING.
As for Phoebe Cates – I’m sure my copy of FAST TIMES wasn’t the only one with a certain section of videotape worn out. But she is a talented actress as well. THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY was pretty good. Plus, DROP DEAD FRED is a guilty pleasure.
Greetings Steve–
Good to hear you were thinking of Ione Skye too– it’s a small celeb. world and I hope Ione somehow sees this comment– great examples and i will have to check out those Phoebe flicks myself– Yes, Gas Food Lodging rocks!
Thanks for stopping by, Steve!
Elizabeth
for me, it’s kate jackson, my favorite angel, and also (favorite angel male) aidan quinn is a dream but i haven’t dreamed about him in years so thanks for bringing him back
Hi Livvy–
I am happy to hear from fellow Kate Jackson fans here! Loved her and would love to see her tackle some more mature roles; she always stood out for her smarts as well as her sex appeal; i agree with Caitlin: give her something fierce.
As for Aidan Q, I love his face and have distant memories of loving him in something or other– but I agree I haven’t thought of him in years and I’m glad Caitlin brought him back, at least here on the blog–
Great words and thoughts, the problem here is systemic in that studios are making films for theaters, for exhibitors. That dependency on exhibitors means that films are made for an audience under 30 years of age. The 30+ set has a voracious appetite for films but not for theater going. These artists mentioned all do work and in some case prolifically, they are working on projects for niche audiences that we need to work to find and discover. Net, net, there is no shortage of talent out there, only shortsightedness by an increasingly insular hollywood power base. Artists like you Ms. McCarthy are working diligently to change that and for that we applaud you.
Always inspire, never tire, inform to reform.
Art is truth, not propaganda for commercialism.
Blockbusters are marshmallow mind clouds for a failing society.
Keep the faith, tell the stories that enable thought, action and social change.
Thanks very much for these wise– and poetic!– words. So true that Hollywood is obsessed with that ‘under 30′ teen-minded crowd; and the powers that be always seem shocked when a film cannily aimed at the over-30 female crowd (Julie & Julia or Something’s Got to Give) does well at the box office too. I love your quotable quotes here; I will remember the marshmallow mind-clouds and also this truth:
“Net, net, there is no shortage of talent out there, only shortsightedness by an increasingly insular hollywood power base.”
A true Blockbuster Comment here and glad to have you on the beat and on the blog-
Elizabeth
PS to romeoexecproducer:
I agree with you too about Caitlin– yes, an artist to watch who is bucking these trends!
William Zabka update!
He sent me an email, thanking me for including him in the blog post. He wrote “how sweet,” and also mentioned that he appreciates “everybody [I] wrote about.”
What a gracious man. He’s the sweet one!
He’s going to appear in the upcoming John Cusack comedy HOT TUB TIME MACHINE. If you watch the trailer below, you’ll catch a glimpse of Billy Z sporting a nifty 80s mustache:

I believe this is the first time a celeb has responded to a post on this site. WOW. My day has been made.
THANKS to Caitlin and THANKS to William Zabka for becoming our first Celebrity commenter–
It’s great to have you read the blog, William Zabka, and we will watch for you in the Cusak commedy–
Congrats on that!
Elizabeth
I agree that Emilio Estevez and Aidan Quinn are underrated talents right now.
Looking forward in particular to Estevez’ new film coming up.
Hi Kyle–
Yes, Quinn & Estevez are great choices and I’m glad Estevez has a new flick coming out; he has such heart as an actor– Will have to get a link to his new film–
Thanks for stopping by!
Elizabeth
I have to agree that Hollywood has certainly missed the boat with Aidan Quinn. He is absolutely a wonderful actor, but highly underrated. I would love to see him back on the big screen again. Maybe then he would get the recognition he truly deserves.
Thanks Lucille and I second that emotion! Caitlin hit a nerve with Aidan Q.; he’s got some fans wanting a Second Act from him. Hope you get your Aidan wish and hope you stop by again–
Elizabeth
Is the world ready for the second coming of Rick Moranis? I hope so. And when it happens, many Shubs and Zuuls will know what it is to be roasted in the depths of Sloar that day, I can tell you!
Absolutely, Tigh– Bring on Rick!
Yes, someone needs to get Rutger on a good tvshow. He’s fantastic!
Good to hear from another Rutger fan–
Let’s hope the Powers that Be are listening and
thanks for stopping by–
Elizabeth
Kate is gone for a reason. I met her at UCLA in 1992. She is rude.
Hi Stan–
Thanks for this insider info, always fascinating. But in this case, i have to say, disappointing too. She is so appealing and intelligent onscreen. Oh well– maybe fame spoiled her. But thanks for giving us this real-life glimpse of an Angel–
Elizabeth
PHOEBE! PHOEBE! PHOEBE!!
Nuff said.
Well put! I agree; more PHOEBE!
