Are Divas ‘out’? Is ‘Down-to-Earth ‘in’? Mighty Tiger Woods lost the Master’s to ‘everyday guy’ Phil Mickelson. Jon Stewart swoons over Obama’s economic advisor and possible Supreme Court nominee, the refreshingly down-to-earth Elizabeth Warren.
Meanwhile, the top two online videos last week showed the overexposed Tiger Woods faltering in his Master’s comeback and down-to-earth Tina Fey acing her own return, skewering over-the-top Sarah Palin on SNL.
BTW, Fey and hilarious ‘Everyman’ Steve Carell topped the box office last week playing an actually believable (if zany) everyday couple in DATE NIGHT. Has recession-era America had it with glitzy glamorous demanding Divas?
Blog BFF and screenwriter Caitlin McCarthy spots a trend, writing:
Are divas getting downsized in this new era? Take a look at who (and what) has taken a hit recently and you decide:
- Diva politicians like John Edwards
- Diva religious figures like the Pope
- Diva companies like the ones who helped create the Great Depression Part Deux
- Diva countries like the USA (sorry, in the past, we’ve had that “Do you know who I am?” attitude with the world)
- Diva terrorists like Osama Bin Laden
- Diva athletes like Tiger Woods
- Diva entertainers like Kanye West and Jennifer Lopez …. I think trendspotter Caitlin is onto something here… (photos: atypicalamerican.com, nbc.com, nydailynews)
HELL YES, DOWN WITH DIVAS
AND JON STEWART IS NOT THE ONLY ONE
WHO’S GOT THE HOTS FOR ELIZABETH WARREN
Hi Anti–
always good to hear from you and I will pass on your Hell Yes to Caitlin–
I love that Elizabeth Warren too! But should she be best used as a Supreme…?
The “hell yes” is hella good. Thanks!!!!
Hi Caitlin–
Glad to see your concept is catching on– thanks for ushering in the end of the Diva Era here on our little blog; we all know your powers of prediction; let’s hope this one comes true…
I add another Hell Yes and another name: Kate Gosselin; a Diva with no talent. Let’s hope
the indulgence of these beings is truly coming to an end.
Good to hear from you again, Kathy K, and yes, the Divas without even talent to redeem them should be the first to exit in this new era Caitlin is predicting…
But no Diva is going to go quietly…
The Diva Death Rattle will be HIGHLY entertaining. Expect huge ratings for E! as they cover the demise. And who knows, maybe the Enquirer will finally get a Pulitzer for covering the hot mess!
I like DIVA DEATH RATTLE as a title, Caitlin– Maybe for my next opera or your next film… In any case, this concept gives me hope for the future!
Elizabeth, maybe we’ll have to collaborate on that show together!
Update on two ‘divas’: Kate G. may pull off her DWTS gig after all, but she’s still a no-talent high-maintenance diva in my book. And as you must already know, Tiger’s divorce is going through. Good for Elin W.; hope she gets a bundle.
Thanks Kathy–
and I just heard that about Tiger too; here is the link on the Woods’ divorce:

I agree: get out now, Elin; game over.
As for Kate G– While I agree with you, she has little talent, I do feel for her a bit in all this criticism of her mothering–
it’s tough to be a mom, especially in the spotlight. So on that one matter, I wish her luck. Otherwise, I wish she’d get offstage and make room for those who really can dance…
Divas are important, and I believe Tina Fey will do a better job of exposing the flaws of Palin than any political rivals. We need to see more of her amazing satire.
I agree on both counts– Divas are important, yes, and draw a lion’s share of attention in our celeb-crazed society.
And I agree about Tina Fey– she is brilliant as Palin and does a much better job of attacking/revealing her than Palin’s fellow pol.s. Go, Tina!
And thanks as always for stopping by, Barb–
