AMERICAN IDOL VIRGIN by Elizabeth Searle
American Idol is America’s hottest show; but I confess it leaves me cold. I am an American Idol virgin. I’ve never tuned in because the whole concept turns me off. Though I’m getting tempted– just the photos of Michael Lynche make me curious to see if the big guy wins out…
My tastes run toward the offbeat underdogs. And I hate watching the ‘agony of defeat’ even in sports. In the epic Butler vs. Duke game, after the Butler team’s final valiant longshot bounced off the rim into history, I couldn’t watch the devestated stoic Butler players as they filed into their locker-room.
I love the Oscars and other award shows, but there losers aren’t losing their one chance for a lifelong dream. (Though of course for blog fave/Glamlove king Adam Lambert, losing hasn’t turned out half bad).
Simon Cowell sounds like the embodiment of the crushing inner critic we all too often hear. Ellen Degeneres may be drawing fire for being too nice, but her presence on the judging panel marked the first time I actually wanted to give Idol a shot. And then there’s that Michael Lynche…
It’s exciting to see a winner breakthrough. I too thrilled to the YouTube of Susan Boyle stunning her judges. And as a Blogger, I don’t want to miss out on a cultural phenom. Can one of our blog’s witty commentators (and/or new readers who are Idol fans) tell me what all the fuss is about? I’m also eager to hear from kindred spirits who resist riding the Idol wave…Go, Michael Lynche!
