Schwarzenegger & Strauss-Kahn…
When will Men in Power realize that the rules of the game are changing?  Though he’d been playing in the big leagues of fame for decades– enjoying movie stardom, a celebrated wife, beautiful children, high elected office– Arnold Schwarzenegger willingly risked it all for sex with a member of his household staff.
Of course, men in power have been behaving like pigs since time began.  But as Tiger Woods could have told fellow uber-jock Arnold, the ‘blind eye’ that used to be turned to private ‘abuses of power’ is wide open.
The same week that the powerful head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn is caught in an allegation of rape, former CA Governor and current top contender for Disgraced Celebrity of Spring 2011, Arnold S. admits to betraying wife, Maria Shriver.
The sun-addled voters of CA deserve what they got with ‘the Arnold.’  Accusations of his cavilier ‘groping’ of women were rampant when CA in all its Hollywoodified wisdom elected him.

Arnold now begs for media mercy for his family.  But he knew well at the time of his affair the level of public disgrace he risked bringing upon his family.

In a previous era, the allegations against him and Strauss-Kahn would have been hushed up.  The Strauss-Kahn charges are yet to be proven true, but similar allegations allegedly have been made against this all-powerful man before.  While there is much to deride in tabloid culture– and we do enjoy deriding it all here on the blog–it may be that monitoring men in power is one of the better uses of the 24/7 tabloid eye.
If scandals like the one now facing IMF head and disgraces like the one Arnold S. has brought upon himeself serve any purpose, it’s to ‘serve notice’ to Men in Power that the Boy’s Club has glass walls.

THANKS NIKKI SIXX for thanking CAITLIN on Twitter & on your FACEBOOK PAGE : Nikki Sixx “Caitlin,Thank you..Nikki ”

NIKKI SIXX Comes To Boston by Caitlin McCarthy

Caitlin & Nikki Sixx @ BU Bookstore

I previously wrote about Nikki Sixx on this blog site (“From Bad Boy to Good Man”). Since that time, I have joined the Twitter revolution (@CaitlinMcWriter) and become one of Nikki’s followers. Upon reading that he was coming to Boston to sign copies of his latest book “This is Gonna Hurt,” and as well as the accompanying Sixx:AM CD of the same name, I sent an email to my longtime friend (and this blog’s owner) Elizabeth Searle: We are *so* there.

Nikki Sixx holds Caitlin's blog post about him

The book signing was scheduled to take place on May 6, 2011, from 7 p.m. to whenever at Barnes & Noble @ Boston University, the biggest bookstore in the area. And boy, did Nikki need the space. The line for his book signing started on the second floor – and eventually went all the way up to the 5th floor. My guesstimate is that one to two thousand fans were there. Nikki planned on staying until every single book was signed. That must have pushed midnight.

Thankfully, I was on the 2ndfloor. I waited four and a half hours so I could spend less than four minutes with the icon.

Fans waiting for Nikki Sixx

To put a spin on Nikki’s latest project, it *didn’t * hurt standing that long. I had a ball. Part of the fun was getting to know the other fans in line. I met Stephanie and her 15-year-old son Gianni; two schoolteachers who live one town over from me (sorry stalkers, I won’t say where, haha!); a guy who had rock star signatures, including Nikki’s, tattooed all up his arms; a lesbian couple who treasured the words of acceptance in Nikki’s books and music; and many others.

Elizabeth showed up at the bookstore after me. She wasn’t able to join me in line due to a “no cutting” policy. So she walked around the store, taking in the scene. She wound up shooting the best video of Nikki coming out of the elevator for the signing. She excitedly ran over to me in line, waving her phone: “He’s here!” (more…)

High School Reunion (and the Prom That Could Have Been) By Caitlin McCarthy

Caitlin in 1984 with 'Princess Di hair'

Mr. Stubljar (aka “Mr. Stubes”) my favorite high school teacher (English, of course!) who also served as my advisor at prep school, is retiring this month. He has remained my steadfast champion over the years, reading my screenplays and encouraging me to keep charging the hill – year after year after year.

When I received an invitation from my alma mater to attend a private cocktail party celebrating Mr. Stubes’ retirement (he had put me on his guest list), it was a no brainer for me: I’d be there for him, after all of the years he was there for me. The cocktail party was scheduled two hours before the class reunion dinner. My 25th reunion isn’t until 2013, so no one from my class was going to be there. This dinner was for other classes celebrating their 5th, 10th, 15th, and so on.

You would think that in light of all this, I wouldn’t be stressed. But I was. Why? Because I’ve never attended *any* high school reunions. (more…)

UPDATE: LA Times writes about Birthers/Deathers but you HEARD IT HERE FIRST…We posted early AM May 2.

In this moment of triumph for President Barack Obama and for the US Military, how will the Right react?  Will they have the decency displayed by former President George W. Bush to congratulate not only the brave military team but the President himself?

Saturday night at the raucous White House Correspondents’ dinner, the President coolly roasted Donald Trump, all the while knowing he could not give any hint that the big operation in Pakistan was afoot.

In contrast to the President’s super-cool performance that night– infinitely more impressive knowing the pressures he was under– GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump showed only infinitely ‘thin skin’ as he sulked his way through inevitable ‘birther’ jokes.

Our own blog fave Litotes wonders if in the wake of the Bin Laden news, the Right Wing-nut ‘Birthers’ will now become ‘Deathers’.  Already online, rogue theories are popping up trying to cast doubt on Osama Bin Laden’s death.

My one concern as I heard the amazing news was the Bin Laden body had been ‘buried at sea.’  While I understand the need to respect Muslim traditions and to avoid creating a ‘shrine’ to Bin Laden, I hope the US has kept hold of enough DNA and photograhic evidence to quash any ‘doubters’/’Deathers.’

Hopefully this unifying news will mark a turning point not only for the country and for Obama but for the Right Wing– who should take a decisive turn ‘away’ from their more extremist elements and who, like George W. Bush, should give President Obama his due.
