BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER by Litotes
He made his wad in security software, then drifted down a ditzy hippie path into yoga and elixirs, with (unlike Steve Jobs) nary an iPhone to show for it.
My first thought was “bath salts casualty”, analogous to the long-ago psychedelic musical acid casualties. I am willing to cut many breaks to Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett, Skip Spence, and similar crew, may they RIP. But someone who invents a virus scare to sell more anti-virus software, not so much.
Then again, maybe there’s something else in the mix: security software folks have a long history of being asocial, anti-social, or downright paranoid. And their kind of paranoia seems to involve, let us say, an incomplete model of The Other. Other people are there to be deceived, to get them before they get you, and, if young and female, to be made use of.
So McAfee, who the NYT calls “a priapic 67-year-old, with an improbable mop of blond-highlighted hair and a rotating group of young girlfriends”, had the right job in the past, and is now going crazy on his own time. Selling guns to such a one is some state’s big mistake.
